Hello

Looking for some advice on a trackplan,

Struggled to draft something with shunting and long running operations on the same board without saturating the board with track and not allowing for any scenery, so decided to rather do long running operations.

Any opinions or maybe suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Blue and Red tracks are hidden stations,

Previous layout was very flat, need some height differences, not especially keen on helixes, maybe needed though.

Thanks for the help.

Regards

Dewald

Hi,

I like the multi-level dogbone design with long mainline runs. The general approach looks mature.

Question: Do you have access from all sides, especially to visible and shadow stations?

Some fine-tuning suggestions:

- "Tilt" the plan slightly thereby avoiding straight track running in parallel to the layout edge and creating "diagonals" which are more pleasant to view.
- I noted that you use R2 and R3 on the mainline parallel track; I would add easements at the beginning of curves for better appearance of coaches, principle presented here: https://www.marklin-user...81-Easements-for-C-Track
- The visible station could become more sexy (track arrangement); e.g., the ladders of the shadow stations look more elegant than the one of the visible station.
- There should be a rationale for the turntable and loco depot, e.g. traction change, division point, double-track mainline splitting into two separate single-track lines or meeting of main and branch line(s).

For inspiration regarding the rationale of the visible station plus turntable, here the approach of a German modeler:

And to illustrate what I meant by making the station track arrangement more sexy, I add plans of prototypical German railroad stations on a double-track mainline which are easy to model.

Seeing those track plans you have reproduced Alsterstreek, are you aware of this web site which has examples of a number of branch line stations, with some examples of sketch plans for layouts based on them.

Hi. Thanks a lot or the reply. Layout will be on wheels so access is no issue. Hidden stations will be 20cm down from track on top, hope that should be enough. I have problems rotating the track as width of the boards do allow this.

This is also the reason the main station is a bit plain.

Would you suggest doing baseboard different shape. Length 400cm width 265cm.

Thanks again

Dunno.

Have a look at my idea for a L-shape alternative with similar room dimensions for a long double-track dog bone mainline with a station, long bridges, shadow station:

There is a simultaneous U-shape layout discussion where an interesting station design came up:

How about an island layout which is viewed (and accessible) from all sides with a tall scenic divider in the middle giving a diorama feeling, plus the possibility to have radically different backdrops on each side (big city vs. countryside)?

My main layout is like that and I am very happy with the effect.

Here is a recent interpretation of a classic Maerklin U-shape design by the late Bernd Schmid.
