In North America, it was much more common to find mixed freight cars than it was to find mixed passenger coaches or loco consists in passenger traffic. I do remember that D&H used to run the Montrealer all the way to Montreal. AFAIR the Adirondack used to run with CN from Montreal and would then receive a US loco at the border or along the way.

Very model friendly: do not put Preiserlings in and many different types can be mixed in one train.

Hello PJ,

Your photo is showing the Boston South Station.

However that rainbow era train was leaving Back Bay Station at Boston in February 1972. The station building in the background lasted from 1929 until being replaced by a new structure in 1987. Nowadays, Back Bay Station is still being served by intercity and local trains.

In the spirit of the very first entry, and since nobody knows what paint scheme mother M* might come up with in the future:

Quote: "During the mid-1960s the Southern Pacific and Northern Pacific operated run-through freight trains between Eugene, Oregon and Seattle, Washington. This photo shows one of the run-through SP F-units resting nose-to-nose with an NP F-unit in Seattle in August 1967."

Sadly CB&Q and WP would soon be out of the game, leaving Rio Grande to rename the service the Rio Grande Zephyr, with service from Denver to Salt Lake City. D&RGW was fiercely independent and refused to give over the passenger service to Amtrak in 1971. Instead D&RGW operated this route until 1983. Near the end demand was low, very short consists could be seen, normally pulled by EMD F9s.

Perhaps another mixed one, UP Steam and Diesel Pulling D&RGW coaches in 1997 (D&RGW and SP merged, later to be absorbed by UP):

One more on the Denver kick (although I think this may have been shared on the forum before):

ATSF and CB&Q in at Denver Union Station, 1967. I think that may be a UP care on the far right, but hard to tell for sure.

I had been trying to identify it to ammend the post, but I think you are right. Thank you! After searching based on your suggestion, it seems most likely it is indded a B&O car like the B&O pullman Maumee River sleeper show here (at home in Balitmore). Obviously the type of car is different, but the colouring looks the same.

I would guess they came to Colorado Springs via Chicago to Denver, or perhaps via St. Louis to Pueblo.

Yes they were too.
Here is my boxed set of HO cars made by the French firm of PMP in the 1950s.
It represents the Nord Express as it was in 1946.
This train was usually made up of CIWL cars, + ex Nord SNCF cars + Danish State Railway (DSB) cars + an occasional Swedish State Railway Car + an occosainal Netherlands Railways car.
While originating in London (then boat), and Paris Nord, then Ostende (Netherlands), some parts (or versions) of the train went on to northern Denmark, some to Stockholm. And at Hamburg, travellers could transfer to a Moscow bound version of the train.

UserPostedImage

I was unable to buy the ex Nord cars, because they are rare. So I substituted ordinary SNCF cars.
And I am unable to find tinplate examples of DSB cars.

regards
Kimball

SP, DRGW, and Chesse system (B&O) diesels on the Rio Grande ( by then SP) mainline at Kyune, Utah in 1989. While at this time the DRGW/SP mashup is not suprising, the B&O Chessis system unit is certainly an odd friend as through power.

A couple of Rio Grande SD40T-2 "Tunnel Motors" bring up the rear in helper service.

I remember the Laurentian which was CP/Delaware & Hudson, running from Windsor Station to New York. It ran on CP to Rouses Point, where it continued south on the D&H Lake Champlain line to Albany. From Albany, it headed south via NYC line on the east side of the Hudson River, ending up at Grand Central Station. This route continued to be used for many years by the "Adirondack", which in the late 1970s was shifted from Windsor Station to Central Station (CN/VIA), which involved switching to CN tracks from Rouse's Point to Greenfield Park (Victoria Bridge) and Central Station. The CP/D&H also ran a night train which was called the "Montreal Limited"

From what I have learned, the photo you posted is the B&M "Ambassador", which originally ran from Montreal to Washington DC via St. Alban's, Burlington, White River Jct, Hartford, New Haven and then the Northeast Corridor to NY City (Penn Station) and on to Philadelphia and Washington. Some years, the train had coaches that were detached along the way and continued to Boston, while the main train continued south. This train was cancelled in 1966.

This service was reborn as the "Montrealer" (NB) and "Washingtonian" (SB) and was run by CN and CV in Quebec and Vermont (White River Jct), Boston-Maine to Springfield MA and was run by New Haven in MA and CT/NY and by PRR from NY to Washington DC. This then became the "Montrealer" under Amtrak and was operated by Amtrak. Today, this train no longer runs to Montreal, but ends at St. Alban's VT with bus connection to Montreal.

There were other trains before my time, operated by the Rutland RR with names like Mount Royal and Green Mountain Express, as well as trains run by Canadian Pacific (Red Wing/Alouette) which connected Boston to Montreal's Windsor Station. The CP trains also had a connection to Quebec City.
