My first weathering attempt of the Faller goods shed 120154.

Despite what some modellers say is not recommend, I tried using only cheap art acrylic paintBigGrin

The advantages I found areThumpUp

Much cheaper than buying the small 3$ tins...
You can easily mix your own colours.
It gives a texture to the plastic which you don’t get with Tamiya or similar products.
Very easy to blend colours to create concrete or weathered roofs etc.

But you do need to give the plastic a good wash and scrub before starting any painting!

DisadvantageThumbDown

For items requiring a smooth surface (like a steel pipe or small window frames etc.) I would not recommend it.

Anyway below is some photos. Appreciate any comments. Thanks!

The roof was made with a watery green colour. As a wet acrylic paint will not easily stick to the plastic it creates a flacking effect. Light shades of rust and soot was then applied later.

The pallets where made by scrap plastic parts. The bales on top are painted blue-tac!

Hi Lasse

The shed looks fantastic.ThumpUp It comes across well.

I too have that shed and have left it as it came from Faller. Mine is also from around 1974/6 period and is showing a few signs of ageSad

Lasse,

I have this same faller shed, but without the weathering. Thanks for the inspiration and the tip about using acrylic. Do you water your colours down to create a wash, dry brush or both?

Thanks for comments.

Brandon; for the cladding/bricks I gave it a non-watered colour. The art acrylics can be quite strong in colours so I found it’s best to tone them down (mixing some white/beige colours in it). When dry I then applied a contrast wash and wipe the top surface with some towel papers.

For the roof I used mainly washes, same effects used for the concrete. Each wash needs to dry before applying the next one.

A tip...use an baseground colour to put on the plastic parts before you start to weathering building.
It makes in better condition to add dirty way.
And besides...to washing plastic parts???
I have never done this and it wont help either too.

Hi all,
Lasse, nice job!ThumpUp Some matte finish would be nice,...Smile
A couple of things:It may not be necessary to wash plastic in warm soapy water,I do this step. There was(in older kits) a release agent used to take the plastic out of the molds. This can cause a problem with paint.
Also dry brushing helps a lot!

A great bit of weathering DanlakeThumpUp

The only thing I wouls add is a light coloured wash to pick out the cement between the bricks, but otherwise it looks great.

I don't tend to wash my structures before painting, however, I do make sure any rolling stock I build is washed in warm soapy water before painting. The paint stays on so much better after washing which is important as my roling stock can get knocked around a bit. It is not just the manufacturing process that puts grease and oils on your models, but handling the model with your bare hands also puts oils from your skin onto the model that will cause paint to peel.

Cheers,
Rick

I like to build the flat walls, weather with a blackish wash and dry brush the highlight colours. Paint in the brick mortar by painting all the brick white/grey then quickly wipe the paint off the tops of the bricks with a damp rag leaving the mortar in place, this also helps to take away that horrible plastic look. Then glue all the walls and roof together and then a bit more weather to finish off
Cheers

Very nice effect on this model. I too have always used acrylic artists colors and like them a lot. In my experience, pre-washing in soapy water also helps.

A bit off subject...the photos that you have taken are great. What camera do you use and what is your technique?

Hi Garry,

The camera is Canon EOS 60D (DSLR). I just used white A3 as backgrounds.

The camera is set at low aperture which creates a blurred background.

No flash - just normal backlight.

Thanks for posting... wash and wipe works great for me too!

I do find that I am going for more exaggerated contrasting in mine... I think it makes it stand out more and compensates for scale.
Will have to post photos some day of my work ....

Hi Lasse,
I have been looking for a shed of those proportions, thanks for posting the excellent pictures.

The weathering is superb. You don't have to worry about the colour of the mortar between the bricks in all structures, as it was often coloured deliberately the same as the bricks.

I have this shed too. I didn't weather mine, but I did paint it in matt enamels to get rid of the plastic shine. The weathering comes naturally after some time! BigGrin

This is the shed on the layout. In this photo all the paintwork is not yet finished, and it's still missing some details.

It looks really good.

I have started to always paint the plastic, even if it already has the correct color. I always use cheap acrylic paint. If you have problems making it stick, then ad just a drop of dish soap, this removes the surface tension and the paint distributes evenly.

For brick walls, I use some of these dry powders in water and again a drop of soap. The solution automatically distributes into the gaps between the bricks.

Vollmer 5708 (water house). Again experimenting with cheap acrylic colours. I changed the house slightly and the water pipe is now on the front side instead of on the back side. I really liked how the roof turned out. I did a little bit of dry brush for highlights as well.

Hi all,

A few more photos of kits being painted with cheap acrylic paint. Still my favorite way to paint/weathering of structures.

I normally paint everything before gluing together and then do a final touch up/weathering in the end. The hardest part is not to overdue the effect but trying to keep everything subtle.

A spray undercoat is almost essential to give a good base to paint onto.

It is something that should be done with all models, plastic, white metal or resin, in order to get rid of any residual mould release oil. If you dont do it the paint will not adhere to the model and either becomes patchy and streaky or peels off when the model dries. Warm soapy (dishwashing liquid works best) water to wash, a toothbrush to scrub into the crevices and clean, running water to rinse.

Glenn, all,

A little (lot) late to the party, but I agree....for most applications a matte finish works well, and I too favour using acrylic paints for weathering. They're easier to correct if you make a mistake. I think dry brushing is easier as well (or maybe just a lack of skill on my part). Washes are also possible if you water the paint down, but tend to require several coats whereas an oil-based paint will not when used as a wash. Cleaning the parts is a good idea as suggested.

Here are a few of mine:

Perhaps this should be a new post, but wanted to give this great post of yours a bump up.

Anyone use "pan pastels" or just try powdering dry pastels to dust on and weather?
Guessing the the "pan pastels" are just powdered dry pastel with a bit of binder...
... any quality binder would do anyway...including your drying undercoat.

Purpose of video was to show how fast and easy it can be to do some basic weathering techniques.

Thanks guys,

The soundtrack is Jack Savoretti (before the storm). His latest album is Written in scars which I can also highly recommend.

Regarding washing the plastic. Not always necessary, but does help getting rid of any oily containment from the plastic mouldings process, which can make it difficult for this sort of paint to adhere to.

On the other hand you can also use it as an advantage. If you want to have a flaking, scaling look you can make a wash and let it air dry. That's how I made the green roof in post no.1.

I guess work effort is relative! Sure I spend a few evenings on this project and could probably have gone faster with some simple air brushing. However even with airbrush you don't get the texture as you do with this type of acrylic paint.

And you only need to buy 5-10 tubes of different colours and you mix and tone you fancy.

Yeah I need to get my airbrush up and running.

Been trying to decide between bottled nitrogen or a compressor but I also need to buy a regulator and don't know what I should buy etc. so nothing much is happening lol.

I did buy a tube of cheap black acrylic from BigW though, so I can do some washes on my brick foundation bridge.
