just wondering if the older 60212 are still a half decent way to go for digital control seeing as i will never be able to afford a CS2.

Hi Peter,

These controllers will still run your trains just as well as they ever did, but you won't be able to expect any software updates or support from either Marklin or ESU. If you can live with that then there's nothing preventing you from using a CS1 for as long as you want.

I can't afford a CS2 either (or at least I can't justify the cost), so I will stick with a MS2 as it does everything I need. I have no need of automation or large scale accessory control on my small layout.

Mostly Marklin.Selection of different eras and European railways
Small C track layout, control by MS2, 100+ trains but run 4-5 at a time.

That depends on your expectations, your loco collection - and the version of the 60212.

If it has version 1.x then it is very limited. It can drive trains and will do this better than an MS1. Can be sent to Märklin for upgrade to version 2.x (but that may not be worth the postage costs).

If it has version 2.0 then it can do a bit more.

If it has version 3.x or 4.x then it is on the level except for the low screen resolution. Still supported with upgrades from ESU.
Regards
Tom

is it possible to connect the 60212 to a Laptop or PC and use Marklin loc program as with the CS2?

I know it can connect to the internet as it has the required connection but would like to know if it can be connected to PC as well

The original eCOS might be a better way to go.. The functional part of the software is identical to the eCOS 2 - the only thing you are missing is the full colour screen..

The only problem is that second-hand ones seem to be selling for more than I paid for mine as a new one.. Blushing

If you are desperate, I might be interested in selling mine to you.. I am more flexible on the price than eBay, but I am not giving it away either..

The 60212 cannot connect to the Internet, but PC software can connect to the 60212 and control it.
Most programs require at least version 2.0.3, but some even work with 1.6.

Each program should have a list of supported controllers.

I asked this question when the Marklin CS PC program first appeared, and was told someone had done it with some success. I don't know what the limitations are compared to using a CS2, but will be looking to try it myself one day.
