The Dutch steamclub VSM has some beautiful operational steamers.
Their two ex DB series 23 were on visit at Amsterdam some time ago.
The clip contains a slow motion repeat of the departure, please try and set your screen to high resolution, and put the volume up.

I am tempted to say: "What is more beautiful than a beautiful woman?,perhaps a pair of series 23 steamers?"

By all accounts, the BR23 was used on anything from coal trains to Rheingold to Orient Express.
A very capable modern machine.
Strangely, I don't have a model.

Kimball

Thanks for the great video. I only have a small assortment of loks but luckily the BR23 is one of them. It's such a great engine in both real and model form.

John

Kimball,i have a very nice Primex version with copper boilerrings, fully analogue.
These come at fair prices.
Note that not all the Primex models of the series 23 have copper boilerrings, even if the productnumber is identical!

The series 23 was ment to replace the series 38 (P8),it was built after WW2 in an era where it would soon be replaced by Diesel and electric power.
In a way,it was a fossil when it was born.
Still,a total of 105 were built.

Hi Paul,

thanks for the great video!
Was interesting to see how some people on the platform recoiled after steamer gave the whistle!
And what a beautiful steamers!
Late steam locos such as Classes 23 & 41 are my faves. Of course, I bought modern M* models of them (39230 & 37927).
I wish I would see real locos of that classes some day. I saw preseved BR 52 in Moscow just one week ago (not operational nowadays), but never seen other real German steam classes. Hope everything is ahead!
Keep sharing nice videos. ThumpUp

Best regards, Andrey Smile

Dear Andrey,

The two most active steamclubs in Holland (AKA The Netherlands) are SSN in Rotterdam and VSM in Apeldoorn.
They both have a large number of paying members, also sponsors from various commercial companies.
I am a member of the SSN and have been travelling with them several times.
Also,i have visited the VSM,they have a great collection, very well kept.

The SSN also has an operational ex DB series 65,which,like the series 23,was also a steamer built after WW2.
I believe this is one of the last surviving series 65 loco's,rather unique.

Perhaps there is a misunderstanding, but the series 41 was not a "late" steamer, she was built 366 times between 1937 and 1941.

It is getting harder and harder to keep these steamers operational, the costs are rising and the knowledge about steamers is dripping away.
SSN are busy with restoring their series 23,including a boiler overhaul,a costly affair.

No matter what, everywhere you go with a steamer you automatically attract positive attention by the general public, people simply love it!
Young boys with their grandfather look up in amazement, they only know steamers from their picturebooks.

The SSN series 65 on visit at Bochum-Dalhausen in the German Ruhr area,i go there every two years or so,great atmosphere!

Cheers,

Paul.

Sorry, forgot a third, the ZLSM,they have some very nice Swedish built steamers!

The VSM have a series 52 Kriegslokomotive (Warlocomotive) in Feldgrau (Fieldgrey) with tubtender (of course) which is fully operational.
This particular machine was built in Austria in 1944:

Andrey,

In case you missed it,especially for you,the SSN 01 1075 on her way back from Sail Amsterdam to Rotterdam last Saterday.
I was on that train and it was great!
One thing i observed was that the coal used comes in big chunks, nothing like the tiny coal bits used by Marklin to imitate a load of coal in the tender.

Put up the volume please!

And the SSN 01 1075 at Bochum-Dalhausen,you can almost feel the weight in your screen!
She weighs some 118,000 kg,waterintake 38,000 ltrs,coal intake 10,000 kg.
Poweroutput 2,350 HP.

Hartelijke groeten,
Paul.

Thank you so much for sharing these great videos, Paul! ThumpUp
Really love that 01 1075, especially when running on the high speed! Love Super sound!
Also interesting observations concerning coal in the tender.
As for 41, I call them also late, because they were made in pre-war years, later than 01, 03, 38, 39 etc and those 41's (as 042s) were among last DB steamers, retired around 1977. May be I'm not correct with the word "late", but I feel them so.
65 is also nice - and this is really late construction.
You are very lucky having opportunities to eyewitness real operational steamers (and even take trips with them). Atmosphere on the special railway events in Europe is trully excellent.

Andrey,

The 01 1075 was built in 1940 in a series of 55 machines.
All the large series of German steamers were built roughly between 1935 and 1944.
Only a few series were built after WW2,such as 23,65,and streamlined steamer series 10.
Electric traction was looming on the horizon, the days of steam were over.

So,in conclusion,the SSN 01 1075 is 75 years old!
A truly graceful old lady!
In 1940 she was delivered with streamline plating,as for the 55 machines 01.10.
After WW2 the streamline plating was removed on all machines.
In 1953 she received a new boiler.
In 1957 she was converted to oil firing.
In 1991/1992 she was at Meiningen for a major revision, including conversion back to coal firing.

Paul.
