I could not live with the lie any more. Unlike her Santa Fe sisters, the venerable NYC never ran through the desert.

It turned out that the Con-Cor Santa Fe Alco PA shell fits on the Maerklin chassis.

Who can spot the difference with the Maerklin Santa Fe Alco PA?

I'm seriously thinking about removing the motorola decoder from my 37610-49610, install an ESU (or a new Marklin) decoder on each loco and keeping using it as a consist.

It really sucks that Marklin doesn't sell aftermarket decoders with dual motor support.

I have all the double Alcos made by marklin and they are all running perfect for many years with their decoders.I ran them hauling 100 cars on 5% uphill without any problem. What do you mean saying 'decoder with dual motor support'?

Hi,

Both engines have a motor, and a single decoder handles both machines, that's what I mean with dual motor support.

The problem that I have is that I can't run these machines if my layout runs on dcc only. I need to keep motorola settings active.

Hi Alsterstreak,

Re; Who can spot the difference with the Maerklin Santa Fe Alco PA?

The non M one has a larger radius on the nose panel, dull maybe wrong colour paint, no large running number !

Whilst not a PA specific thing, this auction may be something for someone's F7; http://www.ebay.com/itm/...eName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

Edit 1 Oct 15; So did I win the prize Wink Smile Unsure

I see the B unit in the ebay link above, is probably sold, did any member here get it ?

M. has been producing quite a few American locomotives and American freught cars. But coaches and passenger cars very few, and always the silver Budd cars.
Recently I purchased Southern Pacific streamliner cars from MTH, a special edition for 3-rail operation and equipped with interior lighting.

http://mthtrains.com/80-60029-5

http://mthtrains.com/80-60030-5

Now I can run my Alco PA-1 Southern Pacific with these 8 cars. In principle they are meant to be used with the SP steam locomtive that is also available from MTH in 3-rail version.

Danilo,

Here is a webpage about converting Marklin 3346 using a single Marklin conversion decoder. Marklin 3346 was a twin DB 236 (V36) set, each with a DCM motor. Svein (forum name Intruder, but he has sadly since passed away) comments about using a single decoder and the load for two motors. Maybe this will help.

Myself, I am trying to keep away from too much USA MRR, I'll just try to stick to my one Big Boy and about five Blushing sets of Marklin UP freight cars and a Caboose Wink

However, if I were keen for some SP Passenger cars I think these would be it, especially if I had a set of Streamliners already and need some more SP RR passenger wagons, like Panayotis surely does Wink
They look like nice models, and other MTH coaches I saw at the 2013 "Days" were superb Smile

I think MTH saw a huge gap in the Marklin Market, and jumped right in, good on them ThumpUp

MTH saw the gap, but Marklin customers haven't noticed MTH. MTH had to cancel some 3e+ models (2-6-6-6 allegheny for example) due to the lack of orders. Nevertheless, the available models are great. MTH needs to make their models compatible with marklin/viessmann braking modules, tho.

I noticed MTH. My dealer would have to go through Busch of Germany. Frictions are preventing him from dealing with Busch though. Directly buying from the USA is no option for me after my recent low-value import extravaganza with the local Customs office.

I noticed MTH about 5 times so far ;) But I agree, the market saturation doesn't seem to be there yet. A couple of US dealers have been pretty vocal emailing about it trying to drum up interest, but no idea how well it's been adopted in Europe? I'm really hoping they do a few more classes in 3e+, GP9, GP30, some sort of switcher, E8, etc. Most of their road names are well chosen, they can complement existing Marklin locos and stock.

However MTH use a similar model to Marklin, one run and then the models are gone, so when initially entering the market it could be hard to get what you want as you have to be on the trigger to order in the right window. Marklin you can always find later on eBay, etc if you're willing to pay for a certain model....but the MTH stuff hasn't reached that saturation yet.

Sweet - those really are beauties - the Alco PA's are perhaps the most beautiful diesel locomotives ever produced.

I don't have any PA's yet, but one of these days the chance will come along! BigGrin

More great images - thanks! The last one (second to last after your edit) is almost art. Cool

I have a question. What is that device on the roof in the second image? The elevated plate above the horns, located over the cab. I don't recall seeing that device on a lok before. Maybe an antenna?

I have a nice large format Alco book with many excellent pictures, which I forgot to check before I posted. It does not show any PA's with that though. I did not see it on any PA's used by other railroads either, so I am guessing it was an exclusive ATSF thing.

My guess is that it is an experimental antenna of some sort...

Seeing all of your wonderful images made me revisit my Alco book for some fun facts.

The first A-B set was tested on the Lehigh Valley. Then ALCO added a second A unit and it was sold to the Santa Fe, who painted it in the warbonnet livery designed for the Santa Fe by GM.

ALCO ran ads extolling the PA's high power, lower weight engine with superior hauling power. They also claimed lower fuel and lubricating oil consumption and reduced maintenance needs compared to the GM E-units.

The 244 engine range turned out to less reliable though compared to the E-units, which contributed to shorter service lives and lower sales. Both the 12-244 and 16-244 engines were updated in a 50's redesign but their failure rate persisted, especially for the 16-244. If I remember correctly that was due to excessive crankshaft flexing, which lead to bearing failures, especially in heavy use.

The Southern Pacific had rugged, heavily graded lines and favored the PAs for long distances over graded territory. In mountainous use the dynamic brakes and rugged GE traction motors offered distinct advantages. Ultimately the SP was the largest customer for the PA/PB models.

All of the PA/PBs were out of service by about 1970, except for the Delaware & Hudson's four PAs, which they bought from the Santa Fe.

Jim

More great images - thanks! The last one (second to last after your edit) is almost art. Cool

I have a question. What is that device on the roof in the second image? The elevated plate above the horns, located over the cab. I don't recall seeing that device on a lok before. Maybe an antenna?
Yes, antenna.

Thanks for those links - that style antenna is an interesting detail that I didn't know about! BigGrin

I have almost all Märklin and mostly HO, although I do have a small number of Z gauge trains!
So many trains and so little time.

That is one very handsome locomotive, a genuine classic. Thanks for sharing the image.

I have the SP PA-1 A-A Unit (Märklin 37613) and would like to add a PB-1 unit in between in order to hava a A-B-A unit.
Question 1: Does the Life-Like/Brawa PB-1 shell fit on the Märklin PA-1 chassis? Anyone ever tried that out yet?
Question 2: Do the Daylight colors of the Life-Like/Brawa model match the Daylight colors of the Märklin model or is the color tone difference too significant?
Question 3: Would it be better to have the PB be placed between the PA´s and lay the wires throughout the B unit so that the 2 A units can be electrically connected or would it be better (if the shell matches onto the chassis) to put the B unit shell onto the trailing A unit chassis and the trailing A unit shell onto the B unit chassis behind it?
