A beautiful P8 (BR38) in full swing, fantastic steam action in the second half of the clip.
To me,the P8 is the godmother of all Maerklin steamloco's.
When they released M 3099 in 1967,i was a boy of 12,to me this was the ultimate dream (girls at that time did not interest me)!
The design of the P8 has proven to be one of the best ever designed.
The configuration of 2 drive axles under the boiler and 1 drive axle under the cab makes it a very stable locomotive, suitable to drive forewards and backwards in normal service, capable of pulling passenger trains or freight trains.
The design was longlasting too,the first loco's appeared well before WW1 (1914-1918),the last loco's were outphased in the mid seventies.
I have 3 of them in my collection, one with Witte elephant ears, one with Wagner elephant ears, and a Primex with tubtender.

Please enjoy!

Paul.

Thanks Paul!

I like the P8 too, although I believe it was the 3098 (and Helmut Kern supports me here) that came first, in 1967. The 3099 came ten years later.

My brother and I got our (first?) 3098 either in 1969 or early in the 1970-ies.

At that time Märklin was a lot less expensive in Germany compared to Sweden (30 to 50 % off compared to Sweden).

1969 our parents got a camping trailer and we went to Brittany in France. During many years after that we were in continental Europe every summer. We made sure to make a stop at Märklin stores every year, in for instance Hamburg, on the way back, a "tradition" started in 1969. You can stove quite a lot of Märklin with your bed linen - actually a lot more than what the customs rules for bringing in souvenirs and other goods allowed at that time. However the Swedish customs were more focused on those having too much liquor, wine or tobacco and illegal drugs - they never looked inside our camping trailer.

I believe I still have that 3098, or if I'm wrong then my brother has it, and I've bought another 3098 since I liked it so. (My loco database has an entry 3098, but due to some construction work in our house, the store room where it is, is very hard to get to, so I cannot easily check whether it is the original one or a newer one I have. If I bought a new one, then it hasn't got a Seuthe smoke generator and if my P8 has, then it is the original one).

Thanks Per,
You are correct,it was the 3098,look how she shined in the 1967 catalogue,it was a must have!
Please see www.osterthun.com and look for the P8/BR38.

Paul.

Another note, 3099 came out in DRG livery (when it came out in 1978), and then changed to DB livery sometime in the 90s. I am not sure if this was the same time where it was added to the "hobby" line, but seems likely to me.

The mentioned page of the P8 (Class 38.10-40) can be found just here.
And you might like this page as well with a chronological story.

A beautiful loco.
great videos of the real one !
great pictures of Märklin models !
Thank you for sharing all these informations.

I'm also a P8 fan.
I've started with the one included in the 29525 starter set.
Delta decoder and an orange light in the cab to simulate the fire glow !
This model is so reliable and the motor is so well centered inside,
allowing a fully detailed cab and the place for the drivers...

The one I would like to have is The Primex brown version from 2701 Orient Express starter set Drool .

Best regards
Joël
