Yes that is a great trip. Did it in '97 IIRC, but the train was much shorter than that, and had only one loco, not three. Looks like they have had to resort to modern coaches as they didn't have enough of the old restored ones that our train used.

I assume the locos that were on show at Dunedin station are still there, although the article doesn't appear to mention them. The station is really spectacular, as they say.

Another trip to take is the trans-alpine which goes from Christchurch. There have been links here in the past to youtube videos of a snow plough train on that route after a good snow, with spectacular results.

Yes, this is wonderful train trip that follows the first 64 or so kilometres of what was the Otago Central rail line. I had a ride on it a few years back.

The rail line stops at Middlemarch. The rails from there all the way to Alexander were lifted in the early 90s and the track bed is now a ‘world famous’ biking and walking trail, known as the Otago Central Rail Trail.

I was down that way earlier this year and drove from Alexandra as far as Ranfurly, following in part the rail trail. It was my first time in that part of Otago – a wonderful place. ThumpUp

Here is a photo of the back of the Ranfurly Railway Station, with a view of the track bed (and a few keen cyclists). The station has been preserved as a visitor centre and includes as history of the rail line.

This is a photo looking south from the station showing the track bed stretching into the distance.

Well worth a visit.
