Dordt in stoom (Dordt in steam) is called the biggest steam event in Europe.
Dordt is abbreviation for the city of Dordrecht, just south of Rotterdam.
On Saterday 02 June 2012 my wife and i visited the city under glorious blue skies, and we travelled by train,of course.
Needless to say the centre was full of people trying to get a glimpse of the various steam operated crafts present.
There were steam driven tugboats, locomobiles from England, and the SSN from Rotterdam provided steamtrips with their BR01 and BR65.
Dordrecht is one of oldest cities in Holland, located at a crossroad of major waterways.
The centre is full of historical buildings, there is so much to see that a single day will not be sufficient.
The town church dates back to the year 1285 and was finished in 1470.
Height of the tower is 66 mtrs.
It has a total of 67 bells with total weight of 52,000 kg.
The biggest bell weighs 9,830 kg.
One of the pixs taken in the church has a text which freely translated says: "Life is like a river flowing into the sea of death"

Thanks Peter,

I was not raised in a Christian spirit, instead i believe in freedom of speech and a life full of happiness for all mankind, not restricted by any spiritual bounderies.
Nevertheless i am always impressed by big churches like these, they were built in a time without computers, the immense weight resting on the pillars was calculated based on guesstimates, there were no guarantees in 1200/1300/1400.
And mind you,the church was completed well before Columbus discovered a country now called USA.

You may also enjoy the Bavo cathedral in Haarlem, near Amsterdam.
Did you know that Harlem in New York comes from the word Haarlem in Holland?

Cheers,
Paul.

Thanks Paul, I feel the same as you do. I have always loved stained glass. I have some pieces
in my home. Yes , Paul I know about Harlem. I am a native New Yorker and was born on Manhattan Island just north of Harlem in Washington Heights. The first European settlers in New York were first Dutch of course. Cheers,PeterSmile

Paul,

I was quite taken back when I found out, the Romans had a big influence regarding boatbuildings in Holland, this is where most of the Roman ships had been build and the technic was handed down to this seafarer's country and since than had years of experience building boats.

Hi Paul,

Magnificent organ.

I have just been viewing Queen Elizabeths' Diamond Jubilee service in St Pauls Cathedral, London.

The organ in that church is magnificent, but does not overshadow the one in Bavo Cathedral which you so richly photographed.

In their day, organs were as much admired as the steam engine, and were treated with awe.

regards
Kimball

John,

I believe you on your word,i have never myself investigated Roman history in Holland.
What we were told at school was that the Romans were not having fun in Holland because of our wet and cold climate.
Obviously,in those ancient times there were no major waterworks present, the country was fully open to the cruel forces of the sea.
Clearly,if one had a need to move around,a proper boat was essential.
I must assume boat building has gone through its own evolution worldwide, and Holland was no exception to that.
We were also thought that famous shipbuilders in the period 1550 to 1700 were designing ships based on gut feeling, not mathematics.
So,the Dutch sailed the world over with ships which were designed on the back of an envelope,so to speak.
Because of this, the vessel Vasa immediately sank in the port of Stockholm after being launched, believed to be caused by a large number of heavy canon put on board, the builder forgot about that.

By the way,the city of Nijmegen just south of Arnhem ('A bridge too far') was a Roman fortification too.

Kind regards,
Paul.

Greetings Kimball,

Some stats for the Bavo Cathedral in Haarlem:
Built 1370 to 1520.
Style Gothic (obviously).
Height of wooden(!) tower 75 mtrs.
Changed from catholic to protestant just afer 1559.
400 tombstones in the floor, freely accessable to the public, including the one for Frans Hals, one of the most famous Dutch painters.
Muller organ built 1735 to 1738,over 5,000 pipes.
Mozart played it in 1766 at the age of 10.

Enjoy!
