Hi,
I promised to show you my different layouts which I have on the attic of my house..
Let us start with Märklin 1935.
The size is 1,10 m x 2,20 m and is made of Märklin items produced in 1935.
The tracks have in the middle a thin track of 1mm, what was changed 1936 to 2 mm.

UserPostedImage
The island platform 422 and level crossing 458 are also the first version of 1935.

You see on the next pic the station building 412 (built 1935) in the back and building 416 in front with Good Shed 427 (built 1935)
UserPostedImage

Loco R 700 (version 1 from 1935) with coaches 341 , 342 and 343 (version 1 from 1935) as well as loco RS 700 (version 1 – 1935) with trucks 365, 381 and 374 S are “on duty”.:

Hi Wolf,

Just wonderful. ThumpUp ThumpUp

Maybe you could confirm for me that the 1935 track has the securing holes to the outside of the rails near the middle of the track section.

Thanks.

Ian.

Hi Ian,
I will try to explain the differences of the pre-war tracks gauge 00:

1935 and 1936 the tracks had the securing holes to the outside of the rails near the middle of the track section.
The picture shows the thin (1 mm) middle track - 1935 only - versus 1936 with 2 mm.

UserPostedImage

In 1936 we have another difference with the tracks. Marking " Märklin Germany" was changed to " Märklin Made in Germany"

UserPostedImage

In 1937 the securing holes were altered due to the "new" holes at the side of the track, this hole was for cables.
See pic 3. But note, this side hole for cables were already 1935 and 1936 with the half size tracks!

UserPostedImage

I hope this will answer your question.

Regards Wolf

Fantastic layout, Wolf. It is amazing to see everything in 1st Version 1935.

And thanks for the track presentation. I did not know that the reason the holes were moved in 1937 was to make room for the wires, that is very interesting!

Fantastic Xmas layout. It makes me think to my own 1935-1945 layout (without snow...;=) )I dismantled a few years ago.
The fact that you use only 1935 tracks is moreover very original.

Thanks for the pictures !

Very nice layout work Wolf ! ThumpUp

Thanks for the precision on differences between 1935 and 1936 track versions, it adds to these two very informative posts on track versions by Steve (cookee_nz) :

https://www.marklin-user...riations.aspx#post311311

https://www.marklin-user...Versions.aspx#post314490

Also, in your post next door ( https://www.marklin-user...in-official-700-210.aspx ), you have helped to confirm to me what those 1/4 length of tracks with the red color on the side of the ballast are for ... separating outer and inner circuits !

Two of these pieces showed up in the last batch of 3600 track I bought recently, and I wasn't sure if the red was original Märklin, or the crazy previous owner with a big red marker ... either the track piece does not show up in the 1935 catalog I have, or I don't have the right catalog ... Woot

Very helpful ! ThumpUp

I do want to come over and help you dust everything BigGrin.

May I please ask a question?

When Marklin had that center rail, did the loks have the ski for electrical pickup or a roller like Lionel?

Thanks,

Rob

Hi Rob,

It was more of a ski type electrical pickup with two small contact tabs. Later the all silver spoon type pick-up, then the same type with copper tabs starting in 1945 and then in 1947 an all silver flat tongue was introduced and next the ski slider.

Example of pickup in 1937 (used from 1935 until ~1938)

Thanks Paul,

I should have recognized your "handle" as you are the young gentleman who gave that discourse on Marklin at EuroWest a few years ago.
My dad had M* when I was a kid and I had Lionel. When I was in college in the 70s my parents gave away all the trains to the "cousins", bummer.
I returned home for Christmas break and wanted to set up the trains, when I learned what they had done, I felt like becomming a headline in the local newspaper.
"College Student Kills Parents over Toy Trains" LOL........

Hope to see you at EuroWest this year.

Thanks Wolf,

When I saw the pictures I thought I had died and gone to heaven.
That is a fantastic collection, I received my first train in'46 or '47 when I was either 2 or 3 years old.
I had two older sisters that were into trains and I inherited their trains also.
I just wish I was more aware of the Marklin Museum when I was stationed at Ramstein AB.
I discovered Z scale there as that was a good size for military housing, I never thought about looking for a club and choosing HO scale.
Now, I need to make a special pilgrimage to see the M* Museum and would love to see your collection also.
There is something about the older classic trains under the Christmas tree like when we were growing up, now it is trying to model everything correctly to scale.
