Well, I already voted on the poll, but now it's crunch time!

I have just enough money for one new Marklin loco this month, on my radar are either a 39110 which is loco of the month and around Euro 180 ( I LOVE softdrive sinus and don't have an E10/E40 yet) or I could by a 30210 before they are finally sold out.

Decisions, decisions.........

Nice. Adding the votes on pro-choices #1, 3 and 4 - we end up with 48% positive for the blue boxes ... ThumpUp

I made the poll multi choice, as I knew that people may have more than 1 reason for liking or disliking these items.

Hello,

I think the old style boxes are a nice touch. But it's really the old style models that excite me. The 24 cm tin plate coaches are awesome ... just like the ones I bought as a kid. They are perfect on the anlog sections of my layout where everything is pretty much old style construction.

I love the look and feel of the 30210 ... the little bycicle logo is so cool! When I opened the model up, I was really happy with what I found: an old school motor with an MFX decoder. Granted there are benifits to the new motor technologies. However, I wonder if 20 years from now I'll be scavanging the used motor market trying to find a replacement for one of my c-sine loks. One thing's for sure, I will always be able to service/rebuild the 30210Smile

Bye,
Rob

You're dead right there Rob, you have summed up exactly why I like the digitised old school DCM/LFCM/SFCM motors.

I'm having this exact problem right now with my other hobby/addiction: RC model warhship combat.

I standardized all of my size/weight constrained ships (Cruisers mostly) on these wonderful Maxon motors I found about eight years ago. The Maxons are small, don't weigh that much and have an incredibly low power draw under load. Which means I can use smaller/lighter batteries in the ship models (read: more weight/room for cannons, ball bearings & CO2).

Anyway, after countless sinkings some of these Maxon motors are starting to have bearing problems ... no suprise there. Locating suitable replacements of the same size and power rating has turned out to be a lot more difficult that I anticipated. Heck, just interrepting Maxon part numbers and their meaning seems to be a science onto itselfSad

One of the engineers from Maxxon Australia is a member here, he helped out quite a bit when one of our members had trouble getting a replacement motor for a 37450 Br45. Nev might remember who he was. You could email/PM him for an answer to your problem.

Thanks BigDaddy and Nev,

I saw the orignal thread and considered reaching out to Jon for help at that time. I've been meaning to ever since but never seem to get around to it. I guess I'll go transcribe the part nubmers and see if Jon can offer any insight as to what I should purchase from the current product line.

Bye,

The original boxes are my preference not only for aesthetic or sentimental reasons, but because those boxes with the plastic shells, tabs, and sleeves tend to discolor quickly to a sickly yellow and disintegrate, becoming utterly useless. Models in them must be padded with bubble wrap for protection in storage. Originally, the picture of the model housed inside was printed on the box making it much easier to put them away and to select them when they are packed together. Finally, form-fitted styrofoam inserts obviously cushion the locomotives from damage better than a generic box. The "retro" is actually an improvement.

Some very interseting Questions and choices to be made in this poll. They have to be looked at carefully.
I notice that there are some more choices.

Here's a blue box item we seemed to have missed (although I have my doubts as to whether it is genuine, as there is no entry in the Marklin Product Database for it).

Now I'm confused. That appears to be a scan from a Marklin catalogue or leaflet, how can it not be genuine?

Where is the image from?

Or have I missed something (in my most famous Zoolander impersonation voice) REALLY REALLY REALLY obvious here?

Confused

Unless of course you're referring to an item ANNOUNCED by Marklin but never actually put into production or released for sale - it would not be the first time they did that.

Steve, it looks genuine, in the traditional Marklin style, but when it has a 1 gauge F7 in the Australian Ghan livery, you do wonder.

It was a pdf I found on Rapidshare (not one of mine). It is 3.5mb, so I will send you a copy via email.

I only have the Insider Ford Van kit in a blue box and the 2009 Mueseum Wagon, of which I bought the Ford model off Trade me Sneaky , cause I was an Outsider at the time, Scared for nostalgic reasons, as I had one when I was a young Marklinist, and the Museum Wagon to add to my Leig-Einheit Train, but I'll admit did like the packaging too.
As for the Loks I prefer the more modern realism and technology Blushing Wink Smile

Yes, that is correct, but it is advertised as a replica of 3008 and 3048! So, near enough for me!

Yes, I also got a set of the Leig Einheit Museum wagons, for the same reasons as Glen. I see that Marklin have issued a new set of Leig Einheit cars in this year's new items.

That feeling is certainly missing with the modern boxes of today, you see a white or grey box with some kind of sterile drawing or you see the wagon model itself through a plastic window...

The box design means more for mental advertising than you think...

Good point, I would have liked a nice box cover for my Thalys set. At £375 the most expensive Marklin set i have ever bought, I would liked to a seen some nice re-pro graphics of a Thalys set on the front of the box, without seeing the set through any plastic glass! I guess it would cost more to produce etc. But after Marklin did away with the scale drawings of locomotives and replaced them with photos i was a little disappointed. I would have preferred this on the Thalys box even. I would like to see what the Tintin set will look like, im told it will have graphics on the box.

Yes, I certainly agree with Juhan's comments about the boxes. One of the reasons why I like these blue box items is the cool graphics/paintings on the boxes.

Some items (E03's come to mind) were newer technology items, but issued in a blue box, but other items are from the tooling in use in that period. This trend seemed to start in conjunction with Märklin's 150th birthday.

So far we have had

30159 SBB Ce 6/8 Crocodile - 1996 Insider Model
2009 Museum Car
2009 Magazine Club wagon kit 'Ford'.
28950 Le Capitole Set
30210 V200
00796 Tin Plate Coach set
37574 E03 Triple Set
37629 Union Pacific F7
30050 Br23
26490 Blue Bird Alco PA1 set.

We also had the 31859 / 31860 set of 3 Crocodiles, but they did not come in a blue box.

Are these items something you find appealing, and want to buy? Or do you see them as just another sales gimmick?

If you like them, which other items would you want to see Märklin produce. A 30470 Br44 perhaps, or maybe a 30150 Crocodile?

30390 - E 10.12 plus 40850 - 5 Rheingold coaches set "Tin Plate" came in the blue box too.Huh

These blue boxes are only a marketing instrument. I do not care about the packing, because the pieces inside get unpacked and the rest into the basement. The price of the product is much more important as the wrapping.

Which one I like to see? The new restored Big Boy from the USA in H0! The box does not matter, whatever Maerklin will pack it up. Hopefully it comes for a reasonable price.Wink

P.S.: Both, the E 10.12 and Tin-Plate coaches, came for a very reasonable price.

This is a topic from 2012, but I couldn't resist responding to Cookee's jibe at the younger generation...

The items mentioned in the poll will therefore reflect what we had available in 2012.

While 30390 is a nice loco with a nice set of cars to go with it and by all accounts the locos and coaches sold very quickly, I was disappointed with it as the original 3039 was cobalt blue and I would have expected that any replica of a 1960's loco would also have been in cobalt blue. The blue/cream livery model was never released in the 1960's as it didn't exist then.

How to take a young person seriously?

Easy, follow their example (they don't take anything seriously)

I find it amazing that people forget or don't realise that every generation of teenagers are convinced that they are the only one's who truly understand the world, and every generation of parents are convinced that their kids need to grow up before they can be taken seriously!

The kids who are today complaining that their parents have left them an awful world to grow up in should be told that those same parents were marching the streets campaigning for a better world in their day. The parents should also be reminded about how they felt about the world in their day!
