I have a few Primex engines and a couple of the sets. In most cases they are indistinguishable from their Marklin counterparts. I consider them to be an extension of the Marklin range, with different versions available from those in the main program. A couple of examples:    |

I too like Primex, but really, what's not to like?, it's simply Marklin afterall. A couple of the catalogues that BD refers to are very extensive and contain everything the budding modeller would need. Including many items you won't find even in the full Marklin catalogue. I had three sets, foolishly let one of them go some years back, it was the set with the Orange Shunter and three Iron Ore cars - very cool indeed. Maybe one day I'll find a replacement. I still have the 2702 mixed Tanker Wagon Set with the Blue E44 Loco (won't make the same mistake twice), and also have the Orange Primex Container wagon which looks great. I'm sure there's something else tucked away but perhaps not. If I have any complaint about Primex, it's with the flimsy plastic orange packing - you only have to open a 'box' a few times and the plastic will start to split. I am glad I've asked this question. It is something I had in my mind since childhood and my first electric set. I always remember how the white track always clashed with the brown  and in those days every bit of track had to find some place, for a kid more was more. Also having to reverse the loco by shifting a lever was annoying.  Yes,it is Marklin after all and while my view of it has been shifting over the years I always used to see Primex somehow as an inferior product which I avoided whenever possible. I have probably 5 locos and a couple of wagons I do regret selling some other wagons in the past. I may start considering it more seriously now, after all it's also rarer.

Have only the PRIMEX set 2702 and I got that because of the Beige/Ozean 144 (Photo shown by Ray higher up) and a couple of PRIMEX passenger coaches, one 4192 and two 4193, that I have together with some MÄRKLIN 4037.

Yep that's an interesting one, I also like the orient express set and the class24 in photoghrapic livery too. I do have and like the old brown electric that's in the photos up the top.

I've not voted as the option for me isn't there.
As I have never bought any I can't comment - however just looking at what they have produced I wouldn't necessarily say anything wrong against it as it is part of the M family.

I like them because they are different. The old 60s look with the exposed headlamps appeals to me for some reason. I have the green E44 and a BR 23 as shown above. I bead blast the headlamps to give them a frosted look that softens the light. Unfortunatly only one in three lamps survive the process. |

Thanks, Ian and Nev After looking through Bigdaddynz catalog posts and reading what Wolf wrote, I could imagine someone doing an all Primex layout or having a collection of all the Primex items mint in box. The catalog pictures of the large Primex displays are classic, I especially like the photo of the woman with her shopping cart at the oversized Primex display, how cool it would be to fill that cart up with whats on the shelves. Several of my Primex locos and sets have come in unopened boxes! I couldn't wait to rip open that original seal and get at the brand new goodies inside!
What's the point in keeping something like this locked up in a box? You might as well have left it in the shop. My Primex trains are now free to run on a layout, as they were designed to do! (Preferably my layout!)
The only downside to getting one of these unopened beauties is that it usually means that the motor and gears are totally stuck, and it needs a strip down and a good oiling to get it to run. |

Hi, Don't trust to much in "unopened" boxes. Märklin/Primex delivered replacement stickers to their dealers, so that they could show an engine out of the box and reseal it, when the buyer changed it's mind. It is every time suspect when a "rarity" or "never seen model" is corroborated with these stickers. Also with a warm hair-dryer the stickers can be removed nearly without any traces.  Regards Markus

But as Wikipedia says: "Hydrofluoric acid is a highly corrosive liquid and is a contact poison. It should be handled with extreme care, beyond that accorded to other mineral acids." regards Markus

Markus Markus, thanks for the warning. The locos and sets I got in unopened boxes show no signs of ever having been used. As far as I'm concerned if the dealer opened the box and then resealed it it's not as if someone had bought it, played with it for 10 years, and then attempted to pass it off as brand new. Are there any Primex rarities? These were models that were sold cheap in supermarkets. There must be loads of them in circulation, including old unsold stock which has been sitting around in warehouses for years. |

Hi Ray, Not everything was sold in supermarkets, and most PRIMEX-items are produced in low numbers, at least very much lower than their Märklin-brothers. For example the AVIA-Box is coded with a print run of 3,000. Rare items of the last years are for example the V 200 with "Deutsche Bundesbahn" imprinted, the LMS / LNER tender-locos or the special imprintings on the small rail-bus or some goods-cars celebrating anniversaries. But the list is much longer. But don't need such "specials" to find rarities. Just try to find some rails in the early boxes with the green PRIMEX-logo (1969). Regards Markus Hi Markus, I have a 4587 in the box and it has the acid cans. Is this a different model or were they sometimes taken out? I've never used it even though I've had it for years. I've just got back into modelling my Marklin and didn't realise that Primex was collectable. Thanks John.

Hi John,
The 4587 was sold in different variations. Without cans, with grey cans (rare) and with brown cans. The 4587 w/o cans was sold in a picture-box like above and also in the card-board box with window.
