Very nice, Robert! I like your two Br38s. At first glance I thought you were showing us both sides of the same loco, then I noticed the boiler rings on one of them! The lower photo, BTW, contains a Br89 and a Br81. I think you have a typo in the caption. |

No its a BR81 without telex.
Fun to have 2 different versions of the BR38. Fun to have the one with boiler rings but i think the other with smoke deflectors looks better.
This addition doubled my steam powered loco collection to 8 locos (7 of them digital)

Robert and Kristoff great looking locomotives. Love the steam engines and love the color scheme on the diesel. I also added an engine to my fleet this week. I picked up a Marklin Class BR 216 in Red at EuroWest. It is digital but I am not sure of the Model number or year, it came with no box. Also can someone explain to me the difference between saying it is a V160 or a BR216 is this redundant or do these numbers and letters mean different things. Thanks, Chris

When DB introduced their "computer numbers" they applied a principle to add a 0 in front of the class number to steam engines, a 1 to electric engines, a 2 to large diesel engines and so on (and the letters E and V were removed). However, for some (if not all) diesel engines classes the adding of the 2 in front of the number would have made the number too long to fit the numbering scheme. For that reason they dropped a trailing 0 of the old class number and thus V160 became 216, V200 -> 220 and so on. I'm sure that there are others who can give a more complete explanation, but this is to give a quick answer and hope it will do for the time being.

Hey Chris,
The v160 and v216 are really the same, the v160 was the old numbering, where the v216 number was introduced when they changed to computer numbers. But they are the same
Kristof
Ps: Nice engine, I love them, I have some versions of it already too. |

The original Diesel class numbers refered to the horsepower developed by the engine, so:
V160 = 1600 hp V200 = 2000 hp V100 = 1000 hp etc.
With the advent of computer numbers, the V was dropped and so was the trailing 0. the number "2" was added to denote diesels, so the examples above became:
V160 > 216 V200 > 220 V100 > 212 (OK, this one had to have another 2 added as the 210 had already been alocated.) |

Kristof The V160 spawned a whole set of variations with different engines and train heating arrangements. These became the Br 215, 216, 217, 218, 219 and 210. Apart from these, I can also mention the original batch of ten V160s, which had a different body shape, and were known as "lollos". I don't know all the details, but I know a man who does: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DB_V_160_family |

BR 218 is a member of this family - but all others are longer than the V 160 and ventilation grills and other details vary. The "218" shown here is a V 160 mould labelled as a 218. The 3918x models are a better representation of the 218 (also available in TEE livery). |

Very nice sets, Ian! That Hornby clockwork set is interesting. I noticed that both Pullman coachesa have the same name, Marjorie. Is that how it should be, or has someone swapped coaches from 2 sets? |

Hi Ian and Ray,
Looking at the book by Chris and Julie Graebe, The Hornby Gauge 0 System, the M1 series was in production from 1926 to 1956. it represented the low end (cheap) of the Hornby range. The pullman cars were available with three names, Marjorie,Aurelia and Viking. Having two coaches in a set is probably the way it was packed. In days gone by people were less fussy and it would have been sold as a relatively cheap toy. Ironically this can make them harder to find as they would be more readily discarded.If there is "Hornby" printed on the cab-side it will be a post-war set but still of considerable age and obviously in excellent condition.
