They are not Märklin, and they are not 3 rail nor digital either, but they are HO ! Not sure if this is the place to post em', but when they arrive and get a good cleaning, they'll probably re-appear again in the "Collector's Corner", someday ^^ ... ... all 3 are purported to come from the collection of Count Antonio Giansanti Coluzzi auctioned at Christie's in 1989 in London. I recently bought the book "The Trains on the Avenue de Rumine" by Count Giansanti Coluzzi (crown Publishers 1983) ... and it was like a bomb ! I don't have pictures of it yet because I spent last night carving out some of the tunnel entrance to get the cab through. Now it makes it around the outer loops with out any problems. I was really afraid that it was not going to run on my layout in fact there is one section of rock formation that I don't think a peace of paper would fit between the loco and rock.
		DT Now powered by ECoS II unit#2, RocRail era - some time in the future when the space time continuum is disrupted and ICE 3 Trains run on the same rails as the Adler and BR18's.

The load regulated decoder was maintaining the speed, so it wasn't obvious to me, but the decoder was getting hotter and hotter. Eventually it cut out. At this stage if you leave it to cool down it should recover, but perhaps if you persevered in analogue mode it was too much for the poor decoder! Remember these are 6090 decoders, the earliest type that Marklin made with load regulation, so the protectio against overload was not so well developed. You can easily replace the 6090 with a more modern decoder. The new Marklin decoders should have the same colour codes as the 6090, so it's a simple replacement. If you want to you can use a Lokpilot or other brand as well.

What decoder would you recommend to replace the 6090? JKJ You could get the 60942 or the 60962. The 60942 comes complete with a mounting PCB and 21 pin connector, which would make it easier to change the decoder in the future. The 60962 is hard wired and takes up less room. If you really want to, you could take the opportunity to upgrade the loco with sound, as long as you can find the space for the speaker. The 60965 decoder comes pre-loaded with generic Steam loco sounds, and will be able to have new sounds loaded on in the near future, perhaps with the correct sounds for a Mallet. There are lots of other possibilities. I would not discard the Lokpilot and Loksound series of decoders from ESU.
