Hi all,

I was curious, the 3102/3302/3502 Borsig models are articulated, but do they run on R1 curves? I would imagine so, since the catalog text does not mention a radius (such as the 1990 Catalog). Can anyone confirms? I know it's sort of ridiculous to run them on R1 curves, but it's all I have.

Thanks,

-Brandon

Hi Brandon,

They run very well on R1 curves. In fact they look better on these sharp curves than some smaller steamers because of the way the articulated frame bends around the curve.

no problems with R1 curves at all. On M tracks however the ramps must be very well done. if the grade increments between tracks are not very smooth they slip easily because of the articulated frame.
cheers

Thanks all. Good info about the grades as well Francisco. I won't ask about the nasty industrial curves I have hidden in places on my layout :) I have certainly learned some things I would have done differently if starting over on my layout, but I'm very thankful I had the foresight to make my largest outer loop mostly obstruction and grade free so that larger pieces can still run.

I wonder that if the Borisg had ever been made if DB would have picked it up after the war and operated it for any length of time....or more likely the DR in the East.

Hi Brandon,

The limiting factor for freight traffic in Europe is the length of loop lines (sidings). With few exceptions, traffic up to this length can be handled by 2-10-0s, vast numbers of which were available after the war and as simpler and cheaper locomotives would have been favoured. The most likely fate for a Borsig would have been as a banker, as happened to the Wurtenburg 2-12-0s. No doubt they would have been run until they wore out or were replaced by electrification. Think of them on say the Semmering in Austria.
