What am I missing here....

http://www.ebay.de/itm/270871533788

22 Carat Goldleaf, "Buy it now" 95.00 Euro - really?

Seems a bit low for what it is. I don't recall it in Koll so I guess it's not a factory edition - someone's self-project?

How would you even get gold leaf onto a plastic body? - plating on die-cast no problem. I know you can chrome onto plastic so maybe this is similar?

It's kind of an interesting item but the auto-translators are not helping with the description. One of our German-speaking friends will have a quick answer for sure.

Cheers

I've just wanted to mention and you may know it already. You can buy gold leaf in square sheets that are about 10cm by 10 cm. I think you can apply that just about to anything. There are also gold (glossy like chrome) and chrome paints without the need for any electrolitic process. However those paints generally make whatever is painted with them look like some cheap plastic. It seems to me the engine body is not actually made of gold it has only an insignificantly thin layer over it hence the low price (depending on your point of viewBigGrin ).

Hi.
Yes this is an odd specimen and certainly "home-made", if you like gold things then it would be a novelty on the layout, maybe a Christmas special for this year !! Laugh

Yep that makes sense, I know gold is highly malleable so I guess it's simply folded over and pressed in around every part of the body although I'd expect to see a bit of creasing around the tricky areas such as the boiler dome valves etc.

Interesting idea anyway.

A small contibution, the finishing may be also metalized under high vacuum like optics in cars, louvers in lighting appliances, sports trophys, etc without the need of using real Gold.
The vaporized metal is Aluminium and the colour is only matter of dying.

Sign Writers use a micro micro thin Gold Leaf for signs on Glass (like Ofice door Signs on the glass). Comes in a booklet with tissue paper between the gold leaf sheets. They pick it wup with tweesers and apply it by rubbing.

It is so thin it feels wet.

Thanks Alberto, except that the seller clearly states this is 22 Carat so it has to be (or at least we trust it to be) genuine gold leaf.

You are right Steve, we must trust it is genuine gold if seller says so. I´m also an ebay buyer and confident in sellers descriptions.
Apologize for being suspicious.
