Finally I received my coach set from ACME. But it is worth the waiting. It includes 3 coaches from the EuroCity 88 running from Milano to München. I added the 3 additional coaches to complete the train. Some pictures: The set comces in a shiny box Out of the box it looks like this Some amazing details

Hi Rinus, those are really great looking FS coaches. I never heard of ACME trains before, are they a new brand? Cheers,Peter

I'm very satisfied with them myself. The interiors look great. unfortunately I'm not a that good in taking pictures. ACME is a small series producer of highly detailed coaches and trains. Their trains are mainly DC, but their coaches can run on AC as well when using other wheels. Most of their stock is Italian, but since recent years they are coming up with SBB, OBB, DB etc.. models as well. I've got around a dozen of their coaches and they are great eye catchers. They focus on detail and exact scale. There prices for these top products are even better: they are cheaper than Marklin and Roco. http://www.acmetreni.it/index.php?lang=enRinus

I have a number of ACME coaches, including the SBB-FS Cisalpino and EN "Luna" coach sets, the FS baggage in the orange "Eurofima" livery, a few FS couchette coaches in the red/gray 1980s livery as well as a number of FS Treno Notte and Trenitalia EC coaches and a handful of MAV (Hungarian) coaches. The coaches are very detailed and can be operated relatively trouble free on Maerklin radii (R2-R5). For safe operation on Maerklin, some small modifications may be required, for example, the removal of small details which may interfere with rotation of the bogies on tighter radii or may interfere with the operation of the coupling shaft. Most of those detail parts can be removed without noticeably affecting the appearance. ACME coaches can be visually combined with LS Models, RailTop, Lima/Rivarossi (1/87) and Roco coaches. In the USA, ACME is available from TEE USA. In Europe, consult your dealer to see if they stock this line. I also recently discovered another Italian company Codice270 by MdF Models: http://www.mdf-design.it/index.htmlI like to check Italian dealers like tecnomodel-treni.it or trenietreni.it ever so often. Both websites have photos of most models and provide a good way to see what the model looks like when other dealers may still be using catalog stock photos. Regards Mike C

Hi Rinus, I looked on YouTube and I could not find a restaurant coach in one of the ECSI consists between Italy and Germany. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iGECjWl_lF4http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=80OlzyaKMWchttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z5Zh2-K3fyQRegards Mike C

Hi Mike,
Thanks for the movies.
Nope no restaurant coach! I had not expected that.
I counted seven coaches. I'm short of one to make my consist prototypical.

Nice review of the beautifully created coaches !! Really throws Marklin to shame by the look of the detail and attention put into it.. |

Thanks! I like them alot too.
Difficult to compare them with Marklin. ACME is set on exact scale and perfect detail, where Marklin has a different more conservative orientation. It attracts different customers.
What I find fascinating is the price of ACME compared to Marklin. With all this details you would expect ACME to be very expensive, but in reality they are cheaper than most Marklin products.

ETR.. hmm This one? the Eurostar City? The color scheme does match at first sight, but I'm not quite sure. Maybe Mike C can help us here? Rinus

Trenitalia has been using the ETR500 powerheads (aka E414) with the ECSI coaches. The separate coach sets represent the Munich-Milano train which is hauled by regular locomotives. An E444 or similar lok would be the correct one for this consist. The E414s are being used on some routes because this gives the consist push-pull capability, which eliminates the delay caused by lok changeover in terminal stations.
On international routes, like the one to Munich, convention loks are used because locomotive changes are required at border stations (system changeover). A train between Milano and Naples is another story as the consist may reverse in terminal stations in Firenze, Rome and others along the way, so saving 3-5 minutes in each such station is a good reason to use this type of dual lok consist.
